Great design never goes out of style. From Victorian architectural details and natural materials to thoughtful lighting and timeless finishes, Kevin Ho explores what makes a home feel beautiful, functional, and enduring—especially in San Francisco.

What Are Some Home Design Trends That Remain Timeless and Why?

A:

We’re spoiled in San Francisco (and maybe a little cowed by it, too). Our Victorian and Edwardian homes show that good design lasts: millwork, coved ceilings, wood floors and tall windows have outlasted so many fads.

Quality is the touchstone, whether it’s the skill and care of installation or handpicked, intentional elements: arches, rich wood surfaces, elegant metals, real stone, subway tile. (A well-installed 80-cent tile can outshine a $500-per-square-foot one installed poorly.)

Chrome, nickel and silver endure; brass has come and gone and is back again. A simple palette, whether Victorian elegance or clean mid-century California, ages well.

But much of this plays on luster and light, which is key. White walls are versatile (paint colors can change), and we always advocate for better, more sophisticated dimmable lighting, because it literally lights it all. A warm mix of overhead, task and accent lighting makes any room feel bigger and calmer.

And don’t forget the devilish details that turn out divine: paint sheens, hardware and trim make a home feel finished.

Let's Talk About Your Home

One of the things I love about San Francisco homes is how much character they've retained over the generations. The best ones remind us that good design isn't about following trends—it's about quality materials, thoughtful details, and spaces that feel right year after year. Whether I'm helping someone buy, sell, or rethink their home, I always look for those enduring qualities that make a place truly special.
