We’re spoiled in San Francisco (and maybe a little cowed by it, too). Our Victorian and Edwardian homes show that good design lasts: millwork, coved ceilings, wood floors and tall windows have outlasted so many fads.
Quality is the touchstone, whether it’s the skill and care of installation or handpicked, intentional elements: arches, rich wood surfaces, elegant metals, real stone, subway tile. (A well-installed 80-cent tile can outshine a $500-per-square-foot one installed poorly.)
